The life of a struggling artist… You work for days and finally come up with your masterpiece. Then you hope that someone will recognize your talent and buy it. But there’s a problem - you just don’t know how to sell your art.
Well, here are a few ideas for you.
1) One thing that’s especially important nowadays is to have a web presence. Put up a blog of your artwork and have pictures of your art so people can see what it looks like. You never know. Someone might just come upon your blog, like what they see, and become a customer. The point is, if you’re not visible, you’re not going to make any sales. So putting up a blog with as many samples as you can is absolutely vital to your success.
2) You will also want to network with other artists. After all, you’re not all in competition with each other. There are different buyers out there for the many different artistic styles. By networking with other artists, you may just make contacts with those individuals who have customers for your particular style of art and visa versa. You’ll get a lot farther in the art world making friends than trying to succeed on your own.
3) Also, and this is really a must, check out some art forums online. Just Google “art forums” and you’ll find a number of them. You can get more ideas from hanging around forums than probably anything else you can do.
4) You also need to know what the market is willing to pay for your art. If you want to sell your artwork for $400 but the market is only willing to pay $200, you’re simply not going to be able to sell them. On the other hand, you also don’t want to sell yourself short. If the market is willing to pay $400 and you put a price tag of $200 on your work, they’re going to think that you simply don’t value what you do very much. So pricing is critical in this business. And this, again, is where checking out the online art forums can be vital.
5) And probably the most important tip to give you is to simply give it time. So many artists get discouraged after a couple of weeks. And let’s be honest, the art world is incredibly competitive. For every successful artist, there are probably a thousand who are aspiring to get just a hint of recognition. Those who are determined to stick it out are the ones who are eventually successful. In many cases, it’s simply a matter of who is the most persistent. You know the old saying:
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not… Genius will not… Education will not… Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
So remain determined and persistent - it WILL pay off.
The bottom line is, selling art is not hard. It will take time, but keep at it and you absolutely will succeed.
