Despite our generation of data phones and personal computers, the Internet remains an untapped resource for small business owners. It is my belief that only 30% truly harness the web’s full potential. The other 70% are either misinformed, or so bogged down with responsibility, that they rely on “drag and drop” programs to support their online cause. As a web entrepreneur, I’ve seen both extraordinary and disastrous attempts at creating web presences. These results are directly impacted by one’s planning, professionalism, and all-around knowledge about what it is they are trying to accomplish.
Ideally, a business is an entity, or, a fully-functioning unit based on management and predetermined order. An online business, however, takes on another doctrine when it lacks a sufficient web presence. Contrary to popular trends, a free hosted service could never take the place of a professional, business website.
In part, creating a memorable web presence takes common sense. The other (and perhaps, most important) factor is an art that requires precision and expertise, and sometimes learning that you’re not the person for the job. While social networks like Myspace and Facebook provide interfaces that can be mastered, self-hosting a website is quite different. Many have found that utilizing web-building software is downward spiral with adverse effects.
Following are what I consider “8 Basic Rules for Creating a Memorable Web Presence.” This information is vital to your online success, and will guide you through the development of your web presence.
